Croatia defeated England 2-1 this Wednesday, securing the team’s spot in the World Cup final for the first time in history. The Guardian reports that after an early score by England’s Kieran Trippier, Croatia trailed for the next 63 minutes. But a remarkable goal by Ivan Perišić revitalized the team and evened the score, which held until the end of regulation. Approximately halfway through extra time, Croatia’s Mario Mandžukić brought the score to 2-1, and England failed to respond in the remaining minutes despite a valiant effort. Croatia—the second smallest nation to ever make a World Cup final—will face France on Sunday. England will face Belgium on Saturday to compete for third place.
