Young Mormons on missions can now call home every week, a change from a prior policy that permitted calling home only on Christmas and Mother’s Day, according to the Associated Press. Under the prior policy, however, youth on missions were allowed to send letters or emails home every week. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reportedly said that the shift is intended to encourage broader family involvement in missionary work. The weekly exchanges also include video chats and texts. There are some 65,000 Mormons presently on missions worldwide, per the AP. The change was announced on Friday.
