Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa survived an apparent assassination attempt Saturday after an explosion tore through a stadium where he was delivering a speech. The blast reportedly went off just as Mnangagwa was leaving the stage at the White City Stadium in the city of Bulawayo. He was not hurt but some senior officials reportedly suffered injuries. Presidential spokesman George Charamba said an investigation is underway into the explosion. “There have been multiple attempts on the president's life over the past five years,” he said in a statement to the country’s state media. The president was visiting the city to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of elections on July 30, the first since Mugabe was ousted last year.
