ZZ Top axed their Hollywood Bowl concert Wednesday with hours to go before showtime, blaming “unforeseen personnel matters.” The Texas trio entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Guitarist Billy Gibbons, 76, now fronts a lineup with Frank Beard, 77, on drums and Elwood Francis on bass. Francis replaced founding member Dusty Hill, who died at 72 in 2021. Gibbons said in the band’s Instagram post that “insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance.” The group told supporters to stand by and pledged refunds covering tickets, parking and travel passes. Cheap Trick, sharing dates on the run, was booked for the same Bowl bill. The group instead moved to the Troubadour, a West Hollywood club, for a stripped-back gig. Beard, in the lineup since 1969, sat out last year’s Elevation Tour over a health problem, with John Douglas filling in. Fans urged Beard to retire then, and commenters on Wednesday’s post pointed to other aging rockers calling off shows.
