Maybe this will get the New York State Senate to hurry up. The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution supporting equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons. It's the U.N.'s first resolution based on sexual orientation. The resolution, proposed by South Africa, passed with 23 votes in favor, 19 opposed, and three abstentions. There has been debate over whether the U.N. ought to take up gay rights, but the resolution puts it on the U.N.'s agenda. It also commissions the first-ever U.N. report on the challenges facing the LGBT community around the world.
