1 Dead After Couple Hit by Train

TRAGIC END

Third death in three years at Virginia spot.

A young couple was hit by a train in Lynchburg, Virginia late Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Jonathan Gregoire. Victoria Bridges, also 21, was hit and airlifted to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Gregoire and Bridges were seated on a trestle that spans the James River. It is considered a popular shortcut and a good overlook point, but the trains coming through do not keep a regular schedule, making it a potentially dangerous spot. Gregoire is the third fatality at the trestle in three years. A man was struck and killed by a train in October 2012, and a Liberty University student was killed and another seriously injured in November 2011. Police said there is an open investigation into the death, but foul play is not suspected.
