1 in 8 New Moms Develop Depression

Postpartum can develop during pregnancy.

Postpartum depression isn't one size fits all, according to a number of recent studies. These findings show that between one in eight and one in five women show signs of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, or bipolar disorder within one year of having a baby. According to scientists, the belief that symptoms only begin a few weeks after childbirth is untrue: depression can develop during pregnancy and within the first year of a newborn's life. These forms of maternal stress may interfere with a mother and child bonding, and could cause problems for the child's developmental health.
