Weeks after South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence, a rebel leader broke a ceasefire signed last month, adding to fears of instability in the region. A spokesman for the Southern army says renegade army commander George Athor launched a surprise attack on several towns, killing at least 105 people. "The number of casualties is high because the attacks were a surprise. This is something we were not expecting because we trusted the ceasefire that was signed," said the spokesman. Thirty nine civilians were killed and another 65 wounded, said the spokesman. Athor began fighting last year after saying he was cheated out of the governorship of the state of Jonglei.
