14 UN Peacekeepers Killed, More Than 40 Wounded in Congo Attack

A rebel attack on a United Nations base in eastern Congo left 14 UN peacekeepers dead and at least 40 others wounded, the AP reported Friday. Deputy spokesman Farhan Haq called the attack, allegedly carried out by a Ugandan rebel group, “certainly the worst in recent memory.” Most of the peacekeepers were from Tanzania and at least five other Congolese soldiers were killed. The fighting reportedly lasted four hours.
