2,000 attendees turned out for the Women in the World Summit, where speakers included Angelina Jolie and Hillary Clinton. The event also featured courageous women and girls from all around, like Suma, a student who escaped indentured servitude in Nepal, and Dalia Ziada, one of many Egyptian women who walked into Tahrir Square ahead of men so that soldiers would not fire on them. Newsweek and The Daily Beast editor-in-chief Tina Brown, who organized the event, said, “What’s exciting about this event is that these women come here and get energized by the freedoms that we have here. I think that by showing these women that we care about them, that we support them, either financially or with time, it fortifies them in their struggle.”
