Moviegoers partied like it was 1987 this weekend as Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s revamp of 21 Jump Street debuted with $35 million in its opening weekend—beating projects by almost $10 million. The $42-million buddy comedy was expected to do well, but audiences seem to be lapping up the film version of the 1980s TV show, which first starred a fresh-faced Johnny Depp. The movie received an 87 percent rating on Rottentomatoes.com. It’s the biggest opening so far for Hill, who’s previously starred in Superbad and Moneyball, and who probably did something to bring in the male audience—a reported 53 percent of ticket buyers for the comedy this weekend. Audiences continued to take a pass on Disney’s John Carter, which cost $250 million to make and drew in only $13.5 million in its second weekend.
