In the first major attacks in Baghdad since April’s parliamentary election, at least 25 people have been killed and more than 80 injured. Eight cars packed with explosives were detonated in the predominantly Shia Muslim areas in the north, east, and central regions of the capital. Officials are still tallying the votes from the elections. In the leadup to polling day, Iraq experienced a surge of sectarian violence. So far this year, more than 3,000 people have been killed. No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but Sunni militant groups have led similar bombings in Shia areas in the past.
