At least 49 people have died in the Siberian city of Irkutsk after drinking bath oil that they believed would have similar affects as booze. Officials in the city declared a state of emergency in response. According to Russian state media, the bottles had warning labels about consuming the bath oil, which contained ethyl alcohol. Russian officials opened a criminal investigation into the matter, focusing on two individuals suspected of distributing the substance. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said: “Undoubtedly, this is a terrible tragedy. Undoubtedly, this is a well-known set of problems. The president has been informed, and without a doubt, this requires the closest attention and adoption of measures.”
