Five British Marines were charged with murder Sunday in a 2011 incident in Afghanistan. Nine arrests have been made in what is thought to be the first such case to come out of the Afghanistan conflict. While the Ministry of Defence said Sunday that it “would be inappropriate to comment further on the ongoing investigation,” Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said that the ministry would ensure “that rules of engagement” be strictly followed. The ministry has also said that no civilians were involved in the incident.
