An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after his 7-year-old cousin shot him in the face, according to Texas City police. The boys were playing unsupervised in an apartment when the younger boy found a handgun and it went off, shooting the 8-year-old in the left cheek. There were no adults in the apartment when police arrived, Capt. Joe Stanton said. The boy has since been taken to a Houston hospital where he is out of surgery and in the intensive care unit. A boyfriend of the victim’s mother may have been responsible for watching the kids. Texas Child Protective Services is investigating the incident.
