Josh Tonsfeldt’s newest work, a video, is now in a group show at Simon Preston Gallery on New York’s Lower East Side. (Click on the image to watch the video.) Tonsfeldt, a young artist from New York, makes art that can often come close to esoteric, but this piece could hardly be more straighforward. A bird flew into his house when he was on a residency in Finland, and he documented its gorgeous presence. The video seems to channel Old Master animal painting, the way a Tonsfeldt installation once channeled a still life.
