Perfectly timed to the Bernie Madoff scandal, a production company has announced it’s adapting the nonfiction book Ponzi’s Scheme into a musical. Jean Doumanian, producer of many a Woody Allen film and the Broadway smash August: Osage County, has acquired the stage and film rights to Mitchell Zuckoff’s 2005 book, which follows the adventures of Charles Ponzi, who in the 1920s fleeced investors in Boston for millions. “The original Ponzi story is just a great tale: He was a very charismatic guy, very colorful, people loved him, and the whole ambiance of Boston in the ’20s before the Depression has great parallels with what we’re seeing today with Madoff and our terrible recession-depression,” Doumanian tells The New York Times’ Arts Beat blog.
