Paul Tremblay’s debut mystery, The Little Sleep, is the story of a South Boston narc detective – except ‘narc’ stands for narcoleptic, not narcotic. Reminiscent of Raymond Chandler and Johnathan Lethem, the drowsy narrator fights to separate dreams from real life, which lends “an edge of existential crisis” to the book. While the book isn’t soporific, the LA Times says that Tremblay doesn’t quite live up to his forefathers, as his portrait of South Boston doesn’t evoke that Chandler-esque sense of place.
