The American Civil Liberties Union announced Tuesday that it is suing the federal government based on complaints that Catholic hospitals are denying pregnant women emergency-room care. In one case, a Catholic hospital’s staff allegedly watched a woman bleed for six hours before discharging her and allowing her to seek care elsewhere. She required emergency surgery and seven pints of blood transfusions afterward, the ACLU claims.
