Board your windows and grab your ponchos: Federal weather experts predict an active hurricane season may bring 14 hurricanes, with half of them qualifying as major hurricanes (storms with winds of or exceeding 111 mph). Comparatively, last year saw three hurricanes. Experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling it an “active to extremely active” season this year, though that might not be a bad thing. High winds could help disperse the oil slick and could help accelerate the natural biodegradation process, one official said.
