Actor Peter O’Toole, the star of the British classic Lawrence of Arabia, has died after a long illness, his agent confirmed on Sunday. He was 81. O’Toole shot to stardom in the 1962 film, and was nominated for his first Oscar. Over the course of the next 40 years, he was nominated for eight Oscars, but never won until he took home an honorary Academy Award in 2003. He was one of the original Hollywood bad boys, saying that “me, [Richard] Burton, Richard Harris; we did in public what everyone else did in private then, and does for show now. We drank in public, we knew about pot.” O’Toole announced last year he would be retiring from acting.
