IT’S A GIFT

Actress Julie Harris Dies

Broadway legend Julie Harris, who won a record five Tony awards and was nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Member of the Wedding, died Saturday of congestive heart failure. She was 87. Harris made her Broadway debut in 1945 in It’s a Gift, and went on to earn Tony Awards for her performances in I Am a Camera (1952), The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs. Lincoln (1973), and The Belle of Amherst (1977). She appeared in the 1955 film East of Eden, as well as television’s long-running Knots Landing. Harris suffered a stroke in 2011 while touring with Fossils, and she was honored the following year at New York’s Lincoln Center, where she found the words to tell her colleagues “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
