The White House likened a potential lapse in National Security Agency surveillance powers to a game of Russian roulette with national security. A senior administration official told McClatchy DC, “There is not an authority that would allow a wiretap for each new phone…there’s not a fail safe.” The official added, “You’re playing national security Russian roulette…and we urge Congress not to play that game with these uncontroversial authorities.” The White House is currently campaigning for a renewal of Patriot Act provisions, which expire at midnight on Sunday.
