Heavy wind and rain blew in suddenly Monday afternoon, setting off a series of avalanches in Afghanistan that entombed hundreds of cars and killed as many as 64 people. The interior minister, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, said that nearly a mile of highway remained buried Tuesday and that authorities had already recovered 24 bodies. Officials feared that up to 40 more people were trapped underneath rubble and perhaps dead. Atmar said rescuers had already moved out 128 injured people. Rescue efforts were suspended at nightfall, but will resume Wednesday morning. Many police and rescue workers had been on the job for 24 hours and needed to be replaced by fresh workers.
