Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vehemently denied his country was working toward building a nuclear weapon, saying there was “not a single credible proof” of such a program in Iran. Speaking to the United Nations in New York, Ahmadinejad criticized the U.S. for its weapons arsenal, and called for eliminating nukes worldwide, because the weapons’ existence encourages other countries to build them. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had opened discussion of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by saying Iran must make it clear to the world that its program is peaceful. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton followed Ahmadinejad, and said that Tehran was trying “to divert attention and confuse the issue” by coming to New York. Earlier on Meet the Press, Clinton warned, "We're not going to permit Iran to try to change the story from their failure to comply.”
