It was a stunning moment, and not only because Alabama’s chance of a fourth national championship in five years had just died. In an unbelievable play in the closing minutes of the game, Alabama’s Adam Griffith’s field goal attempt was turned around at the goal line and returned by Auburn cornerback Chris Davis. Noticing that Alabama players were mainly distracted at the goal line, Davies ran more than 100 yards for the game-winning touchdown, taking the game for Auburn 34-28. “This is the first time I’ve ever lost a game that way, the first time I’ve ever seen a game lost that way,” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Making it even more painful, the Crimson Tide had taken a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter on a stunning 99-yard touchdown pass by AJ McCarron.
