A small red dwarf star, known as Scholz’s star, and its brown dwarf companion passed through our solar system a mere 70,000 years ago, according to researchers at the University of Rochester. The star passed within 8 trillion kilometers of our solar system—one-fifth the distance of our solar system to its closest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri. It is the closest any other star has ever come to our system.
