The film that recently garnered attention for earning $33.5 million at the box office—despite not being released nationwide—is moving to the pulpit. A handful of churches will soon show 2016: Obama’s America, a critical documentary about the president, but the church screenings could be violating tax law. The IRS restricts tax-exempt organizations, including churches, from actively supporting or opposing a particular candidate. “If a church wants to speak out about candidates in that way, [church leaders] should have the right to do so, but current IRS regulations say that they don’t,” the organizing group’s legal counsel said.
