European countries that experienced anti-Semitic attacks in 2014 or 2015 saw a backlash against intolerance, according to an Anti-Defamation League survey. In France, for instance, those reporting anti-Semitic attitudes dropped from 37 percent to 17 percent following January’s attack on a kosher supermarket. “Government response to anti-Semitic manifestations, violence, death, etcetera, do have a positive impact on anti-Semitic attitudes,” said the ADL’s national director. “People are always cynical—does it really matter what the government says? How significant is that? We have always believed it does make a difference.”
