U.S. district judges in Arkansas and Mississippi ruled on Tuesday that same-sex marriage bans approved by voters a decade ago are unconstitutional. The judges put the enforcement of their rulings in the socially conservative states on hold in anticipation of appeals, which means gay couples cannot get married yet. In his decision in Mississippi, Judge Carlton Reeves wrote that, “same-sex couples should be allowed to share in the benefits, and burdens, for better or for worse, of marriage.”
