Arcade Fire Takes Album of the Year

In the Grammys’ biggest category, indie rock group Arcade Fire upset Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry, and Lady Antebellum, the night’s biggest overall winner, to take the prize for Album of the Year. The upset—Arcade Fire's only win—robbed Lady Antebellum of a clean sweep; the country trio had already taken Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Lady Gaga, who hatched out of a giant egg to perform, was another big winner, taking home three prizes for her album The Fame Monster and its single “Bad Romance.” And Esperanza Spalding became the first jazz performer to win Best New Artist with her shocking win against teen idol Justin Bieber. Eminem, who entered the night as the top nominee, only managed two awards—but he did slip a few curse words by CBS’ censors when he performed with Rihanna.
