Archbishop of Canterbury to Resign

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has announced that he will resign at the end of December 2012 after 10 years of leading the Anglican Church. In a statement on his website on Friday, Williams said serving as England’s 104th archbishop had been "an immense privilege" and that there was "much to do" before he resigned. Lambeth Palace confirmed that Williams has informed Queen Elizabeth II, who appoints the Archbishop of Canterbury as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Williams, 61, will go on to be Master of Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge at the start of 2013.
