At least three people have been killed in riots in Zimbabwe’s capital after delays in releasing the results from the country’s presidential election on Monday, the Associated Press reports. Chairman of the Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights, Brighton Chizhande, said the organization confirmed one death and is investigating reports of four others. He said others were injured in the shoulder and buttocks, and that one person suffered a “gunshot wound to the penis.” Hundreds of protestors supporting opposition leader Nelson Chamisa—who ran against President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Monday’s election—faced off against armed troops sent to disperse the demonstrations. Police asked for military assistance because they “unable to cope,” according to a state broadcaster. The opposition and Western observers have called for the results of the race between Mnangagwa and Chamisa to be released quickly. “The more the presidential vote is delayed, the more it calls into question the population’s confidence in the election process,” said former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. This is Zimbabwe’s first election since the removal Robert of Mugabe, who ruled the country for almost 40 years.
