At least 46 people were killed in Iraq on Sunday during a wave of violence that many fear is returning the fragile democracy back to a state of civil war. The bloodshed has been intensifying since April when the government began cracking down on a Sunni protest camp, leaving observers to wonder whether Iraqi security forces are up to the challenge of protecting the country. One of the attacks took place near Mosul where insurgents created a fake checkpoint and killed five soldiers on their way back to base. Multiple car bombs—at least four in Baghdad alone—detonated throughout the day. More than 400 people have been killed in Iraq so far in August.
