Attorney: Dugard Kidnapper Confesses

Guilty

Plea deals would save victim from testifying.

Nancy Garrido confessed Monday to kidnapping Jaycee Dugard in 1991 and keeping her imprisoned for 18 years. Philip Garrido, her husband and a convicted sex offender, was sentenced to 440 years to life in prison for not only the kidnapping, but also repeated sexual abuse of a minor—which resulted in the birth of two children with Dugard. Nancy Garrido, who has maintained that she played no role in the sexual abuse, confessed to snatching 11-year-old Dugard. A judge offered Nancy Garrido 241 years to life in a plea deal, despite Garrido’s pleas that she was a “mother” to Jaycee and her children. Nancy Garrido, who has had no contact with Dugard or her daughters since the couple’s arrest in 2009, cried when she saw Dugard in court Monday, and her lawyer begged Dugard to speak out in mercy. “Jaycee, please talk,” begged Stephen Tapson, Garrido’s lawyer.
