Legend has it that Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest with a revolver before walking a mile to get help, dying two days later in northern France in 1890. But in a new book, Van Gogh: The Life, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith say that didn't happen. Based on 10 years of research and previously untranslated family letters, they believe Van Gogh was shot by two local boys with a malfunctioning pistol. The authors previously won the Pulitzer Prize for their biography of Jackson Pollock. But the question is, did Van Gogh cut off his own ear or not? Not sure about that one.
