It's not just an urban legend: Alligators do occasionally roam the sewers—and streets—of New York City. Animal Care and Control rescued a two-foot-long baby alligator that had been hiding under a car in Queens. Officials and residents are unsure of where it came from or how it got there. Indeed, the discovery has baffled many, including New York City Police Department Spokesman James Duffy, who, before the animal was properly identified, told The New York Times, "We're not sure if it's an alligator or a crocodile because we're not zoologists." Animal Care and Control spokesman Richard Gentles says that his agency rescues two to four alligators or crocodiles annually. As for the alligator in question, it's likely that it will be placed in the hands of a licensed rehabilitator or moved to a reptile sanctuary.
