In addition to taking home the Best Picture prize, Kathryn Bigelow won the award for best director for The Hurt Locker—beating out her ex-husband, James Cameron. "I think we felt a real responsibility to honor the men and women in the field, and to honor the courage of a screenwriter who risked his life to capture the tragedy of war," she said of her film, which is set against the backdrop of the Iraq War. She dedicated her directing award for the "need to find a resolution for peace."
