Belgium ‘Euthanizes’ Terminally Ill Child

A terminally ill child has been euthanized in Belgium, becoming the first minor to be granted a mercy killing since the country passed legislation allowing euthanasia for minors in 2014. No details on the child were provided, but the head of the country's federal euthanasia commission said it was an exceptional case. “Fortunately there are very few children who are considered (for euthanasia) but that does not mean we should refuse them the right to a dignified death,” Wim Distelmans told Belgian media. Belgium is the only country to allow children of any age to opt for euthanasia, as long as they are in the final stages of an incurable illness and are capable of making rational decisions.
