A year after 20 children and six educators were shot down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the town planned a quiet day of reflection, memorial services and the ringing of bells. The bells at St. Rose of Lima church rang 26 times at 9:30 a.m., the time that Adam Lanza shot his way into the elementary school. In a radio address, President Barack Obama remembered the incident as a tragedy that inspired America to make communities safer. “We have to do more to keep dangerous people from getting their hands on a gun so easily. We have to do more to heal troubled minds. We have to do everything we can to protect our children from harm and make them feel loved, and valued, and cared for,” said Obama. The White House is also planning to observe a moment of silence in honor of the Sandy Hook victims.
