It's a far cry from arriving in an egg or a meat dress: Lady Gaga looked shockingly normal in a custom Prabal Gurung long, black dress with a black bow and a straight black wig as she arrived at the VMAs. To perform "Applause," she made multiple costume changes, wearing several different wigs and ultimately a shell bra.

Miley channeled Princess Leia with her hair in two buns—but looked pretty wild in a black spandex two-piece (which was vintage Dolce & Gabbana from 1992, the year she was born) covered with beads and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. To perform alongside Robin Thicke, she changed into a nude, latex spandex number.
