Suspected Islamic militants attacked a checkpoint near the U.S. consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan on Monday. Eyewitnesses report seeing the militants attack the checkpoint with guns and rocket-propelled grenades, before two blasts went off. More gunfire is said to have been exchanged after the blasts. At least seven people were reported killed. Elsewhere in Pakistan, a suicide bomber killed at least 43 people at a political rally. A spokesperson for the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, and promised more violence in the future.
