Evangelical leader Bob Jones III has apologized for 35-year-old comments advocating biblical punishment for homosexuality at Jimmy Carter’s White House. “I’m sure this will be greatly misquoted,” he said in 1980, speaking out against an LGBT rights expansion. “But it would not be a bad idea to bring the swift justice today that was brought in Israel’s day against murder and rape and homosexuality. I guarantee it would solve the problem post-haste if homosexuals were stoned, if murderers were immediately killed as the Bible commands.” Jones serves as chancellor of Bob Jones University, a recently accredited private Christian college whose students must sign a code of conduct that forbids homosexual activity. The apology was posted on the university website.
