A host of authors, it seems, have found their muse in Bernie Madoff. In Thursday's New York Times, Michiko Kakutani looks at two of the most high-profile titles, Too Good to Be True by investigative reporter Erin Arvedlund and Betrayal by Andrew Kirtzman, author of a 2000 biography of Rudy Giuliani. The former focuses on the "how of it all"—how Madoff was able to scam savvy investors for decades, and how he managed to elude detection for so long. Kirtzman's book, meanwhile, reads more like a novel. The author explores Madoff the man and his “descent into evil,” and tries to understand how he could betray so many people. A third, decidedly more scandalous Madoff book is also slated to be released this month: Madoff's Other Secret: Love, Money, Bernie, and Me by the Ponzi schemer's mistress, accountant Sheryl Weinstein.
