It’s comforting to know tyrants are vain, too. A Brazilian plastic surgeon said Friday that he operated on Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi in 1995. Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro said he recommended a facelift, but Gaddafi refused and instead opted for having fat removed from his belly and injected into his face, as well as hair plugs. Ribeiro said he was at a conference in Tripoli in 1994 when a Libyan official asked him to meet someone “Libyans love very much.” After midnight, Ribeiro was escorted to a bunker underground with Gaddafi, who wanted an immediate operation—but Ribeiro held the leader off until he could bring a surgical team in January 1995. Ribeiro said he recommended Gaddafi have the procedure again in five years, but Ribeiro never heard from the leader again. Ribeiro said Gaddafi, 53 at the time, looked like a man in his 40s after the procedure.
