California prison inmates said the state is threatening to search their cells and place them in solitary confinement in retaliation for their hunger strike, now in its third day, to protest the deplorable conditions in the state’s notoriously overcrowded, underfunded prisons. Around 29,000 inmates are still refusing meals after the strike began on Monday to raise awareness of excessive solitary confinement, poor food quality, and lack of educational and rehabilitation programs. Prisoners also said officials had threatened to withhold their mail, refuse visitors, and subject them to rules violations that would affect their parole.
