Current GOP frontrunner Herman Cain casts himself as an outsider, but the pizza mogul has extensive ties to the Koch brothers, who bankroll the Tea Party and other far-right causes. The Kochs are shadowy billionaire owners of energy companies who set up groups like Americans for Prosperity to lobby for lower taxes and slashing of government regulations. In 2005 Cain was tapped by AFP to be the public face of one of its campaigns, and his advocacy on behalf of the group helped him gain a following. Now his campaign manager and several of his aides—as well as the only named contributor to his 9-9-9 tax plan—are drawn from the AFP's ranks.
