California’s state senate approved a bill Friday that would allow terminally ill patients to legally end their lives. The bill now moves to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk for approval, but he has not said whether he intends to sign it. Opponents of the bill say the measure might cause premature suicides. “I’m not going to push the old of the weak out of this world, and I think that could be the unintended consequence of this legislation,” Republican Sen. Ted Gaines said. Proponents, however, say it will “eliminate the needless pain and the long suffering of those who are dying,” as Democratic Sen. Lois Wolk says.
