Italian researchers say they’ve discovered the tomb of the Roman Emperor Caligula after police arrested a man who was trying to smuggle a statue from the site. Caligula is famous as Ancient Rome’s most twisted emperor during his rule from A.D. 37 to 41, having reportedly slept with his sisters, murdered for pleasure, and, most infamously, made his horse a senator. Last week, police found a man loading a statue onto a truck near Lake Nemi, south of Rome, where Caligula had a villa, a floating temple, and a floating palace. The man then led them to the site, where excavation began Monday. The statue is worth approximately $1.5 million.
