A high-ranking member of the Guerreros Unidos cartel has been arrested over the disappearances of 43 student teachers last year. Gildardo Lopez Astudillo has been described as the “intellectual author” of the disappearances. Community members continue to question what happened with the students, despite officials saying they have identified the remains of a second of the missing students Wednesday. The official account says they were detained by corrupt local police on behalf of the gang, and then killed and incinerated.
